How Did Jesus Recruit Volunteers?

1383724_622223787801168_1045573819_nA big problem in most children’s ministry programs, and nearly every other ministry quite frankly, is having enough volunteers to have an effective ministry.  In finding an answer to this very common predicament, we should look to the one who had the most effective ministry since the beginning of time – Jesus.

He personally invited each individual volunteer

  • John 15:16 – “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit . . .”
  • Jesus knew the heart of all of those who would become his disciples.  He went to them and invited them to join his ministry.
  • Take the time to find out the gifts that God have given the people around you and invite them to use those gifts as they join you in ministry to the children.

Jesus did not present a need, he presented a vision

  • Matthew 4:19 – “Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people.”
  • Jesus’ invitation was far more than just a spot to fill or a job to do.  It had an impact on people’s lives and the kingdom of Heaven.
  • Invite people to join the great adventure of reaching the lost children of your community.  The statement, “Please, we need you to fill this position, no one else will do it,” is rarely effective.

He had a personal relationship with his team

  • Mark 3:14 – “He appointed twelve, that they might BE WITH HIM and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.” (Emphasis added)
  • There are numerous accounts in Scripture of Jesus being with his disciples when they were not ministering.  In fact, he often times had to hide from the public to find that time.
  • Spend time with your team outside of the ministry doing things together.  It doesn’t have to elaborate like a 3-day staff retreat (which is great if you can do it); it can be as simple as movie night at the church or your home with fresh cookies.  Coffee, bowling, game night, etc. are great ways to build camaraderie amongst your team.

He equipped each of his team members

  • Luke 9:1-2 – “When Jesus had called the twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”
  • He taught his disciples how to minister, how to pray, how to cast out demons, etc.  Often times, when they were alone and not ministering, Jesus was teaching them.
  • Show your volunteers how to pray with children, how to do Gospel illusions, how to do puppetry, etc. and then let them out to do it.
